Abstract

The aim of this project is to evaluate the health of the beech trees at Hyllis Stationstorg in Malmö. A nutrient imbalance was verified in the trees showing low levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in relation to other nutrients. To overcome these nutrient imbalances the trees were fertilized and the soil was improved with biochar and dressed with compost in order to increase the water holding capacity, reduce the evaporation and support the soil with nutrient over a long period of time. The year after the treatment the trees did not show any signs of improvement either in stem growth, shoot elongation or leaf area index. However, improvements in growth and vitality are not likely to be detectable after such a short period of time.
