Abstract

This report summarizes a gear trial under the Secretariat for Selective Fishing1 , where a size selective grid was tested in the Nephrops fishery. The trial was done onboard a commercial fishing vessel with a twin trawl in the Kattegat in November 2025. The test trawl had a size selective grid with a bar spacing of 19 mm placed behind a standard grid. The size selective grid was open in the back to release unwanted catch. The reference trawl was rigged with a standard 35 mm grid (gear code 306). All catch was sorted, weighed, and measured, and relative selectivity of Nephrops was analysed. The results indicate that the size selective grid had tendencies to decreased bycatch of american plaice, common dab, european plaice, and swimming crabs. The length-based analysis of Nephrops showed a significant decrease in catch of individuals with a carapax length under approximately 41mm. However, these results are only based on data from three hauls and should therefore be interpreted with caution but do suggest that this size selective grid shows potential and should be further examined.
