Abstract

Pine weevil is a serious threat to regeneration of conifers by planting. Protection of the seedlings during the first years is important for seedling survival. The most common method so far has been to treat the seedlings with an insecticide before planting. Currently three insecticides are available on the market, however companies certified to FSC standards are only allowed to use one of those. There is an ongoing debate on alternative solutions since insecticides probably will be prohibited in the future. Therefore in this study one of the most promising alternative is included, a coating called Conniflex. The report is based on a number of experiments at Asa and Tönnersjöhedens experimental forests as well as some practical studies in cooperation with Sveaskog. The three insecticides Merit Forest, Hylobi Forest, Forester and the coating Conniflex protected the seedlings well against pine weevil damage. An additional treatment with insecticides the second year after planting tended to decrease damage by pine weevil. In some of the experiments seedlings treated with Conniflex was affected by unknown damage to a larger extent than seedlings treated with insecticides. The work with the report was financed by the Swedish Hylobius research program.
