Abstract

The levels of 137Cs from the Tjernobyl accident are still measurable in plants and game in areas in Sweden which received downpour from the accident. During the last decades the wild boar has been reintroduced in Sweden and it is expanding in to areas with elevated levels of 137Cs. In other game the levels of 137Cs has been decreasing but this is probably not the case with wild boar. The content of caesium in wild boar is not likely to decline in the close future. In this study I have been reviewing literature on the subject and analysed 72 wild boar samples mainly from the counties of Uppsala, Västmanland and Södermanland. A number of plant, faeces and mushroom samples have also been analysed to identify or confirm major possible sources of 137Cs in wild boar. The mean of 137Cs in wild boar was 789 BqKg-1 fresh matter with a range from 1 to 4860 BqKg-1. Females had twice as high levels as males. Deer truffles (Elaphomyces ssp) had highest values among the food samples, with a mean of 31036 BqKg-1 dry weight and are therefore likely to be one of the main sources for the high levels shown in wild boar. Swedish boars probably have some variations in 137Cs levels according to age and season but further studies have to be done to find significance in these parameters.
