Abstract

The species belonging to the genus Latibulus Gistel, 1848 parasitise social vespids, especially those belonging to the genus Polistes Latreille, 1802. Latibulus orientalis Horstmann, 1987 is here recorded for the first time in continental Europe based on a specimen photographed in El Valle y Carrascoy Regional Park (Murcia, southern Iberia). The specimen was observed investigating nests of Polistes dominula (Christ, 1791), a potential host species. We compare the summer and overwintering forms of the Latibulus species present in Europe, suggest the possibility that in Iberia L. orientalis may be an introduced species and within that scenario discuss its possible introduction pathways.
