Abstract

Plants, being sessile organisms, rely on a delicate balance of essential nutrients for their growth, development and overall health. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of plant nutrient requirements and the intricate mechanisms governing plant nutrient homeostasis. Understanding the dynamic interplay between essential elements is crucial for optimizing agricultural practices, enhancing crop yields and mitigating environmental impacts. The first section of the chapter delves into the fundamental macronutrients and micronutrients essential for plant growth, including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, molybdenum and boron (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Mo and B, respectively). Each nutrient's specific roles, functions, and sources are discussed, highlighting the significance of a balanced nutrient supply for plant metabolic processes. The second part of the chapter explores the mechanisms through which plants maintain nutrient homeostasis, ensuring optimal growth and development while coping with fluctuations in nutrient availability. This involves intricate processes such as nutrient uptake, transport and distribution within plant tissues. The role of ion channels, transporters and signalling pathways in orchestrating nutrient homeostasis is elucidated, emphasizing the adaptability of plants to diverse environmental conditions. Furthermore, this chapter highlights the importance of symbiotic relationships, such as mycorrhizal associations, in enhancing nutrient acquisition and promoting plant resilience. The impact of abiotic stressors, including nutrient deficiencies or excesses, on plant physiology and biochemical pathways is also discussed, shedding light on the adaptive responses employed by plants to maintain equilibrium.
