    Abstract

The cemetery business in Sweden has in various forms come up with appropriate ways to create comparability between governments and other industries, and to make reasonable assessments of the maintenance work on the cemeteries in the country. Previous projects have been implemented in order to create benchmarking for example property management, administration and church activities, but cemetery maintenance has not been addressed in these works. Because of the lack of benchmarking for cemetery maintenance the Department of Landscape Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Design and Construction have together with Movium, FSK (Föreningen Sveriges kyrkogårdschefer), Svenska kyrkans arbetsgivarorganisation, SKKF (Sveriges kyrkogårds- och krematorieförbund) and around 30 cemetery authorities implemented a data collection for three years (2008 , 2009 and 2010) to develop benchmarking for cemetery maintenance. The data collection has generated a large amount of material with much information about the departments and cemeteries that participated. Overall, the project involved some 30 cemetery authorities, which together manage more than 230 cemeteries. The total area of the cemetery areas is about 4 million square meters. The total working time spent on these cemeteries is more than 1.5 million hours or more than 940 full-time jobs. The rich and unique material generated by the project is made available to all participating administrations. During the project, a number of key figures have been seen as particularly interesting. These benchmarking is valid for 2008: • The share of administrative costs to total costs: 17.7% • The proportion of maintenance contracts per total number of graves: 31.4% • The proportion of operating costs to total costs: 88.5% • The proportion of maintenance costs of total costs: 11.5% • The number of man hours per 100 square meters of cemetery land: 12.1 hours • The number of graves per 100 square meters of cemetery land: 5.5 pieces • Machine cost per square meter of cemetery land: 3.1 hours • Burial tax on average: 24.7 öre • Total income from burial taxes per capita: 257.50 SEK • The total cost per capita: 364.40 SEK • The total cost per square cemetery land: 70.1% The project has not been able to see any direct differences between small, medium and large administrations current cost or hours per square meter. For some indicators, it has been possible to see certain trends in either direction, but it has not been possible to find any definit
