Myth: Light travels to and from the sample in a fibre-optic cable without problems

    Abstract

    This myth addresses spectral artefacts arising from the use of fibre-optic cables, typically used in multi-point Fourier transform near infrared (FT-NIR), diode-array or dispersive systems. It is tempting to assume that light travels in an optical fibre without challenges and that the fibre acts like a perfect optical element allowing us to focus on the spectrometer, sampling, cells and probes-but unfortunately this is not so.
