Handling immunity in practise - suggestions and experiences from a Swedish point of view

Publication: Contribution to conferenceConference paper (not in proceedings)

    Abstract

Infectious diseases are the most important disease problems in calves. While diarrhoea dominates in young calves, respiratory disease is the most common disease and cause of death in older calves. Immunity is therefore a crucial factor for the health and wellbeing of calves and young stock. In Sweden, vaccination is not largely used in dairy production, instead infectious diseases in young animals need to be controlled by means of passive maternal immunity, and housing and management that restrict transmission of microbial agents and supports the calves' immune mechanisms
