Abstract
The project “Planning system for need driven outdoor greenspace management through the use ofmeasurement data from sensors” has been run during 2021 and 2022. Participating parties havebeen the City of Gothenburg, Husqvarna AB and the Department of Landscape Architecture, Planningand Management at SLU. The financing builds on contributions from Movium Partnership and theparties in equal parts. The result has been an interesting search for use of smart technology to seewhat opportunities there are to work to a greater extent with need driven management activities, asopposed to frequency driven ones. Provided project funds have enabled tests and evaluations thatwere not possible within the Vinnova testbed Sustainable Smart Parks where, in addition to theaforementioned parties, Johanneberg Science Park and Decerno also participated. Geographically, the focus has been on the two parks Trädgårdsföreningen and Slottsskogen, supplemented by anumber of other locations in Gothenburg. The initial trials in this project in 2021 focused on a system for connected hand‐held machines (e.g.trimmers, leaf blowers and chainsaws) and how data from the machines could be used in greenspacemanagement planning. In parallel, it was explored how data from different types of sensors could beused for increased need driven management. Based on a workshop to follow up the experiencesfrom 2021, the trials with the connected machines were finished, as the development possibilitieswithin the project were considered limited. Instead, new trials were planned for 2022 with a focus onthe possibility of developing solutions for identifying maintenance needs linked to the resource‐intensive management activities of lawn moving, weeding and cleaning. In parallel, a system forplanning and automatic work orders in connection with the management of outdoor environment ofpreschools within the Lokalförvaltningen in Gothenburg was also investigated. In this report, the work with the various trials is described based on an initial, more theoreticalstarting point for what sustainable smart parks can be and how they can be put into a larger context. The result is that there are many opportunities to use the tested solutions to increase the needdriven greenspace management. In 2023 there are many different possibilities to use sensors andother technologies to produce data in order increase the amount of need driven managementactivities. However, there is a great need to develop solutions that cover most of the maintenanceactivities that are carried out in greenspace management. The solutions that are available for e.g.moisture sensors that via an app can guide decisions about when irrigation should take place are onlya limited part of the work and do not provide a basis for planning the overall work with greenspacemanagement. There is a need to develop a system that can be the basis for need driven planning ofgreenspace management where all different parts of the work can be integrated. The experiencesfrom the project indicate that there is an interesting challenge in balancing how an overall planningsystem can help create an overview against avoiding that the same system becomes too controllingand administratively heavy to work with. Both the overall planning system and the various parts forinput data via sensors, cameras, drones and satellite are under development and it will take anumber of years before there are systems that include input data from most of the outdoorenvironment.
