    Abstract

Having a closed growing system in greenhouse production allows great savings to be made in terms of plant nutrients and water compared with an open system. In addition, the environmental benefits are considerable. However growing in a closed system involves changes in fertilisation strategy and account must be taken of the plant nutrient content of the recycled water. Knowledge of the composition of the recycled water is important background information in formulating a new stock solution, with the need for alterations to the solution being greater than in an open system. Production in closed systems places high quality demands on the raw water used, particularly its content of sodium and chloride. In practice, this may mean that other sources of raw water have to be used, e.g. rainwater or municipal water. The aim of this report is to provide greenhouse growers with a tool for calculating nutrient solution for closed systems. It begins by describing the characteristics of a closed system and provides examples of technical designs. It then reviews important parameters to be considered, such as raw water quality, analytical procedures, alkalinity and pH adjustment, and risk levels due to accumulation of plant nutrients. The report presents a method for calculating the composition of a nutrient solution for a closed system. The calculation process comprises six steps and to assist in this process, a list is given of the nutrient content of various fertiliser products. The principle underlying the calculation is independent of crop type, and examples are given for vegetables and ornamental plants. Draft calculation forms are provided as hard copies and in Excel®. Steps in the calculation process: 1. Calculating the composition of the water mix. 2. Calculating the composition of the nutrient solution. 3. Calculating the composition of the stock solution. 4. Adjusting the pH. 5. Suggested procedure for calculating the nutrient solution. 6. Calculating the amount of stock solution.
