Following Walnut Footprints in Denmark, Sweden and Norway

The English walnut (Juglans regia L.) has a long-standing history of cultivation in the Nordic countries, although the region represents the northern limit of its distribution. While there are no walnut orchards in neither Denmark, Sweden nor Norway, individual trees have been planted in private gardens and public areas since medieval times, when the species is supposed to have been introduced (Nilsson 1958). Today, walnut trees can be found in Denmark, the southern parts of Sweden and along the coast of Norway. These areas coincide with fruit growing district where apples, pears, plums and cherries are traditionally grown.
